How we calculate this

These estimates are conservative. We use documented time costs from healthcare supply chain research and practitioner interviews. Every number is replaceable with your own — that's the point of Section 3.

Shortage re-learning Per shortage event: director 20 min + category manager 60 min + buyer 45 min = 2.1 hrs team time spent reconstructing context that already exists somewhere. Annualized across your event frequency.
Emergency documentation Per emergency decision: 2.5 hrs to reconstruct approvals, rationale, and audit trail after the fact — vs. documentation that existed at decision time. At director rate, annualized across your quarterly volume.
OR delays Average OR delay from a preference card discrepancy: 18–22 minutes. We use 20 minutes. Not every preference issue causes a delay — we assume 40% escalate to the OR. At your OR minute cost, annualized.
Staff turnover Per departing supply chain staff member: 3 months of institutional knowledge ramp-up at 50% effectiveness for their replacement. Annualized from your 2-year turnover count. Does not include recruiting costs.
Contract renewal Per renewal: 4 hrs of context reconstruction — negotiation history, leverage points, prior terms, relationship notes. At director rate. Does not include value lost from not knowing leverage points that were never exercised.
Daily escalation overhead Directors handling questions that should be self-serve: conservatively 45 min/day per director of avoidable escalations — shortage history, preference rationale, prior decisions. 250 working days at director rate.
